part of hadley felt relieved that they were finally discussing this and the other part of her mostly just wanted to throw up. now she remembered why they'd avoided this conversation for so many years. it was much, much easier that way. she felt more vulnerable than she anticipated, especially considering she had started the conversation by effectively ending whatever was going on between her and chase. but now she'd pretty much put all her cards on the table, and all she'd gotten back from him was that he "didn't not' want to be with her, whatever that meant. even when she and scott were dating again, chase was going to know that hadley most likely still had feelings for him, which made her feel dumber than ever. chase knew how she felt, and it'd hardly changed anything between them, so of course it wasn't going to change anything between her and scott. her brow creased as she looked at him. everything he said was short and only served to confuse her more. "why would it?" she asked honestly.

hadley didn't completely understand what chase was asking of her. she knew it was definitely pretty weird to have had this conversation and still be getting back together with scott, but she also didn't know what other choice she had. the whole reason she'd started dating scott in the first place was because she felt like she needed to move on and he was giving her the chance to do that. obviously, things became more complicated when he cheated on her, but hadley still cared about him and scott seemed adamant about wanting to be in a relationship with her, so she was willing to give it another try. as far as chase was concerned, though, she didn't know what to say. even if he told her he'd changed his mind and really wanted to be with her, she didn't think it would work. they'd had years to make things work before this, and yet they never did. besides, it wasn't like chase was telling her anything other than that he didn't want her to get back together with scott. "i guess i'm just trying to get over you." hadley said quietly.

all things considered, this was probably the way the conversation was supposed to go. she'd come here to tell chase that she and scott were getting back together, and now hadley was finally going to get a clean break from him. it wasn't like she'd gone into it hoping that if she told him how she really felt, he'd admit he felt the same and things would finally work out between them. but there was a little part of her that hoped that maybe she'd been wrong all along. of course, she hadn't been, and rather than returning the sentiment chase told her he was going to give her space. she should've been happy, because she was going to get to work things out with scott and actually be in a stable relationship, but she couldn't help feeling disappointed as chase responded, eyes cast down. "it's never going to be easy for me." she corrected, voice quiet. hadley bit down on the inside of her cheek, trying to ignore the lump growing in her throat. "but yeah, i mean.. i think that'd be for the best." she said unconvincingly. hadley stayed quiet for a few moments, chewing on her lower lip the way she always did when she was nervous. she took a deep breath before looking up at him again. "at least you won't have to carry my drunk ass home anymore, right?" hadley said with a smile, laughing a little to lighten the mood.

what started off as wanting her not to date scott and if she did, not cut him out, was now chase having pretty much no hope for ever having any kind of relationship with her again. he didn't see how they were supposed to just be friends after this. she didn't want to hook up and she had feelings for him, but wanted to get over them. if they ever had the opportunity to build a relationship again it was bound to be awkward, so it really never would be the same between them. hadley had been his best friend all through college, the sex paled in comparison to the rest of their relationship. he wasn't exactly sure how he was supposed to live a separate life from her. she didn't seem fully convinced that this was the best decision, he could tell by the way she was biting on her lip, but she didn't argue. she wanted to end on a more positive note, and he ultimately did too, but it was difficult for him to fake. he forced a small, side smile as he looked down at her. "i never really minded," he admitted. "i liked knowing you got home okay." he gave her a small shrug, shoving his hands into his pockets. "but now that's scott's job, so" he shrugged again, rocking back and forth on his feet as he debated whether he should head toward the door or wait to see if she had anything else to say.

hadley didn't really know where to go from here. she could barely remember what her life was like before chase was in it because they were so close for all of college. most of her girl friends thought their friendship was kind of unorthodox and always predicted that something like this would happen, and hadley hated to acknowledge the fact that they were right. she also didn't want to think about what would've happened if chase was right, too. she wanted to believe that scott wasn't going to cheat on her again, but there was no way to know for sure. she hated to think that she wouldn't have chase to turn to, but then again, she knew if she kept relying on chase for everything she'd just keep wanting something from him that was never going to happen. "don't start being nice about it now," she teased with a little smile, though she wasn't really joking. part of her wondered if this would be easier if he just acted like a dick. "he doesn't really seem to enjoy holding my hair back, for whatever reason." hadley laughed. scott tended to have a lower tolerance for putting up with hadley's shit than chase did. she noticed chase rocking back and forth on his feet, knowing he was probably dying to get out of there and end this awkward conversation. she knew that was probably for the best, but she also knew that once he walked out he wasn't going to come back and somehow she wasn't really ready to let that happen yet.

chase hadn't even walked out the door yet and hadley already had the sinking feeling that he was right about everything. how was she supposed to turn around and get back together with scott after she'd finally acknowledged the fact that she wanted to be with chase? it made no sense, except for the fact that it was hadley's idea to "get over" chase. chase looked visibly tense, and hadley couldn't really blame him. this was probably exactly what he was hoping to avoid. situations like this were the reason they'd never even tried to be together in the first place. "okay, yeah, right," hadley nodded quickly, fully aware of how stupid it was that she'd just told him they could never be friends and yet she really didn't want him to leave. but at the same time, she really couldn't imagine her life without chase in it, and now that she was being faced with that reality it was harder to swallow than she'd thought. "um, yeah, thanks." she felt a lump growing in her throat as she stepped forwardly impulsively to hug him, then hesitated and stepped back. her eyes started to well up as she grew overwhelmed with the sheer awkwardness of it all and wondered how they'd ended up here. "shit," she laughed to alleviate some of the tension, swiping at her eye quickly as if that would somehow prevent him from seeing. of all the embarrassing things she'd done in front of chase, particularly puking, crying was not one of them. "i don't know why i'm being so dramatic today." she laughed again, rolling her eyes.

chase was ready to accept hadley's hug when she stepped away, taking a deep breath as he saw her face drop. he had never seen hadley cry, not even close, so he almost didn't even recognize that that's what was happening when her eyes started to water. he was such a fucking idiot. why did he have to keep pushing everything? he didn't want her to date scott and he didn't want her to cut her out again, but it didn't even matter. even if he was trying to be stubborn by saying he wouldn't talk to her after she ignored, he knew he wasn't that strong. and even if he was, she was bound to try to mend the friendship if she and scott broke up. now he fucked it up and he couldn't even tell her the real reason why. he just let her bare her heart (or at least enough for him to know what was going on) without giving her anything in return. he was being selfish and cowardly and even though hadley was tearing up in front of him he felt much smaller and weaker than her. he was frozen, simply swallowing as she laughed, screaming on the inside about how much he screwed up but too worried he'd make it worse by saying anything or even reaching forward to give her a hug. this was really it. his tongue poked out over his lip, suddenly feeling like if he said something nothing would come out. "it's okay," he responded, his voice hoarse. stupid response. "call me, you know, if you need anything," he said a few moments after. with a quick rush of confidence, he stepped forward and placed his hand at the back of her head, his lips brushing against her forehead. with a weak smile and a pathetic wave, he finally turned around and left, resisting any urge he had to turn back around.
