raymond hadn't been in the market for a wife. for the last five years the only thing that had truly been on his mind was war. when his father had started dying and had handed his crown to raymond the first thing that the man had wanted for his kingdom was more. it seemed endlessly stupid to him that his father had been so lax, allowing himself and his country to look weak in the eyes of the others. raymond wasn't going to be like that. he'd been on the road from the day after he'd inherited his title, taking back lands his father had given away and forging a new name. he'd always felt more like a warrior than a true king and raymond hadn't seen an end to that until his advisers had urged him to come home. there was a kingdom nearby that it would be dangerous to war with and they had proposed a peace treaty, offering him their princess in exchange. it wasn't exactly what raymond wanted but his council hadn't posed it as a suggestion.

at the very least the princess was beautiful. he'd only had a chance to meet her briefly before the wedding and time had flown by after that, leading him to this moment where he stood in front of his new wife in his, their bedchamber. for the first time in a very long while raymond had no idea how to act. "you look beautiful," he says, finally settling on what he hopes are the right words. "you honor me."

Aemilia had kicked up quite the fuss when her father declared she was to be married to the ruler of a neighboring kingdom. Sure, she understood that marriage was just a play in politics used to keep peace, but she was a revolutionary thinker. A woman who wanted to belong to herself and herself only. The idea of being shipped off to marry some barbaric stranger hardly suited her fancy and she refused to leave without making her father's life an absolute hell. She swore never to speak to him again just before she was sent off to this new kingdom that was to become her new home.

For the entirety of her wedding day she hadn't said much. She acted like a proper lady and went through the whole ceremony without a complaint. But now the two of them were alone in this grand bedchamber that was completely unfamiliar to her. Aemilia knew what was supposed to happen next but was very resistant to the idea. "The honor is all mine. I'm married to a great king and better warrior." She had been told a handful of times that she was very lucky to marry a man such as himself. He was strong. A powerful leader. Someone who could keep her safe. Aemilia supposed security was nice but she didn't think this was really what she wanted.

while raymond was understanding of his reputation as a brute, he didn't find it to be absolutely accurate. brutes had a reputation for lacking intelligence, for one thing. he wasn't a scholar but raymond knew he had enough going on in his mind that he'd been capable of strategic thinking and cunning plans. having his enemies assume that he wasn't very intelligent had only come in handy. he wasn't sure what his new wife felt about him, but he was sure it was nothing positive. this marriage wasn't exactly what he'd been planning when he'd started his take over and unification of the other kingdoms, but he knew he was lucky to have a woman like aemilia. judging from her body language she wasn't feeling quite as fortunate. raymond could only guess at the fears running through her mind but he wanted to do his best to help her lay them to rest. raymond stays where he is, giving her space as he watches her across their bed chamber. "do you mean that?" he asks her with a small quirk of his lips. "i was told that you weren't really looking forward to our union. not that i don't understand. i know my reputation in your country might not be....glowing." there's a tray of refreshments on the table beside him so he pours himself a glass of wine, holding an empty one up towards her. if he were in her position a drink would probably be exactly what he needed. "i just don't want you to feel worried that i'll....force myself on you. that's not my intention." raymond wasn't always this straight forward but he felt as if it would be harmful to cut corners. this was his wife, after all.

Now that they were officially betrothed and their families united, there was really no reason for Aemilia to keep sulking. She couldn't do anything to change it and apparently their marriage benefited the greater good. It would be best for her to simply... move on from her hurt feelings and resentment towards the man standing behind her. This probably wasn't something he had really wanted either. "I could have been married to someone worse." Aemilia glanced at him from over her shoulder while she made careful work of taking her hair down from it's intricate braiding. It was definitely a little more than comfortable be stuck here in this room with him, but again this wasn't something she should be complaining about. She should instead be forcing herself to get used to it. "No? Going to attempt charming me first?" After she had finished taking down her hair she turned back around and stepped closer to accept the wine he had offered her a few moments ago. Aemilia poured some into the empty cup before raising it to her lips. "Or perhaps your plan was to just get me drunk." Truthfully she didn't really think that was his intention either, but she was bitter and apparently giving him a hard time made her feel a little better about everything.

though it might have been surprising to some, raymond didn't have much of a temper. the way he'd taken over the surrounding kingdoms had nothing to do with a lust for blood or a desperation for power, but because raymond saw strength in unity to be more valuable than anything else. another man in his position, one that has also been given the name of warlord, might not have appreciated the way that aemilia was speaking to him. raymond's own father and brothers had always believed in keeping a firm hold over their wives, but he had no such desire. for starters he'd never had much want of a wife and therefore no ideas on how to treat one, and secondly, he found her sort of brave. she was going into a situation where she had a complete lack of control and for all aemilia could have known, it was a situation where he'd end up hurting her. raymond couldn't help but admire that sort of courage. "i don't have much of a plan at all, actually," raymond tells her truthfully as he takes a seat in the chair nearest him. "you're welcome to put your glass down, you needn't drink if it doesn't please you." he had no idea where this night was going to take them as his wife didn't seem very interested in looking at him, but he was pleased to see how it would pan out whether they consecrated their marriage or not. "i've heard before that charm isn't my strongest suit."

Aemilia supposed that by being exceptionally difficult with him, she was also testing the waters here. She wanted to see the lines in the sand and which where the ones he wouldn't allow her to cross. Being beaten into submission by your husband wasn't an uncommon thing, most women just tip toed around into until eventually they did something that would provoke their husbands into hitting them and they would feel shock when it happened. Aemilia didn't want to be put in that predicament so she was attempting to get it out of the way now. Raymond was proving to be frustratingly calm though. That probably shouldn't annoy her but it did because she didn't believe he was this good natured. "It does please me because I'm not sure how I'll sleep otherwise." She quickly drank down the wine and placed the cup down. It crossed her mind to have another but she didn't want to give him the impression that she was a sloppy drunk. She had more grace than that. "Whoever told you wasn't lying." Aemilia wasn't entirely sure where she was supposed to stand or sit but what she wanted to do was get as far away from this room as possible. Instead of walking out the doors though, she sat very stiffly on the edge of the bed and ran her hand over the fur blanket.

in spite of the way she was acting, raymond knew that his new wife was afraid of him. it was easy to understand why she was pretending not to be. giving into fear meant death for men like him and he supposed it might be the same for the women. it wasn't his place to question how his men behaved behind closed doors but he'd heard plenty of stories and seen the way some of the wives looked at their husbands so raymond had to imagine that she'd heard all of that true. "you don't have to sleep next to me," he tells her mildly, reaching up to remove his cloak pin. no matter how's brave she's acting, he can see the way her hands shake around the stem of her goblet and the stiffness in her back as she takes a seat at the edge of the bed. "but i'll be sure to tell my men you've said so. i'm sure they'll be gratified to have you vouching for their honesty." it's been a long day and he'd really like to go to bed, with or without her, but not wanting to startle her raymond remains where he's at. "is there anything i can do to make you more comfortable? i would really like to ensure that either of us go to sleep and fear a knife through our chest in the middle of the night."
