Caleb Penhallow watched as the demon disintegrated before his eyes. A grin, wicked and devious, spread across his lips. He found way too much enjoyment in what he did. He had to say, though, he had one of the coolest jobs out there. And he took what he did very seriously. This was what he’d spent his entire life training for. The day he had received his first marks had been a wonderful day. He’d never felt so much pride in himself, and that was saying a lot. He had felt a sense of fulfillment, like he had managed to accomplish something great. He lived for this. He glanced around the alleyway, searching for the girl that was supposed to be his partner on this, the one that he was supposed to be helping to train. He didn’t see her. He sighed. “Now where did you run off to!?” he groaned in exasperation. She was supposed to be a Shadowhunter, one of the Nephilim. So where was she? He pocketed the sereph blade and made his way out onto the street, his eyes searching the streets for her. He called her name, his dark eyes scanning the area, trying to detect where she may be hiding, or where she may have been running off to. “The demon’s dead! You can come out now!” He sighed, running his hand over his hair, sighing in frustration. “Come on! Really? You see one little Ravener Demon and you run away! What kind of Shadowhunter are you?” He waited, still searching for her, but when he saw no sign of her he cursed. He turned around, finding that he had to quickly side step out of the way because someone was walking past him. Or more through him. Glamours were a wonderful thing, but they had their disadvantages sometimes. “Stupid mundane,” he whispered under his breath. When he turned again, he finally saw her. He motioned for her to come towards him, and tried not to let it show that he was irritated.

All of this was still so new to Skylar, and this first trip out was not going too well. For being a Greymark, there was no evidence that she was going to be able to handle any of this. Skyler had found out about her heritage only a few months ago. It wasn’t something she was getting used to, but here she was out with Caleb, and trying to figure it all out. She had always been handy with a knife, but trying to deal with demons and underworldlings and all of the like wasn’t making sense. She didn’t understand it, but she was trying. It was starting to make sense, but that was when she watched Caleb take on the ravener demon, but then her eyes caught movement. “What was that?!” She flipped around and ran through the alley way looking for the glimpse that she had seen. Half the time Sky thought she was going crazy, because up until a few months ago this world had been unknown to her. She had seen things that other people couldn’t, but her mother had had not idea who her father was. It was why she had no knowledge of the nephilim and who she really was. Caleb was bound to be irritated whenever she finally found her way back to him, but it didn’t matter. She knew that she had seen something, and it was hard for her to let it go. That was when she saw Caleb at the end of the alleyway and he was telling her it was safe. Of course it was safe, she knew that. It wasn’t that she was scared, and as she walked towards him she put her stele into it’s place in her boot. She pushed past him with that matter of fact attitude. “I wasn’t scared. I saw something, and you looked like you had a handle on things. So I went to see what it was.” It didn’t help that she couldn’t find what it was that she had seen, but it was worth a shot. “As for what kind of shadowhunter I am...that would be a new one, or did you forget this is the first time I’ve been allowed out to ‘patrol?’” Skylar hated this, but Caleb was a smartass who thought he knew everything. He had no clue about anything to do with her.

Caleb hated working with the newbies at the Institute. He didn’t really like teaching them or training them or taking them out on patrol. He had a severe lack of patience, which was why he probably ended up getting assigned to these jobs. They were trying to teach him that he needed patience or some shit like that. He didn’t buy it. Caleb crossed his arms over his chest, not believing what she said for a second. “Uh huh. Sure. And what was it that you saw?” There was an arrogance to the question, like Caleb already knew what it was she was going to say. At her next comment, he couldn’t help but laugh. “As if I could forget that. You have novice written all over you.” That, of course, was not a compliment at all. “Come on, let’s go.” He turned without another glance in her direction and headed back down the street. He wiped off his seraph blade as he walked, then shoved it back into his belt. “So where do you think we should patrol next, Greymark?” he asked, not even bothering to look at her as he walked. Of course she would follow. And if she didn’t, well, that wasn’t his problem.

Skylar wasn’t thrilled about this whole outing with Caleb, after everyone they could have paired her with they went with the one person that could get under her skin. It was annoying as all hell, and it didn’t help that she wasn’t paying attention to him in the least. That smug ass grin on his face had her wanting to slap it off his face, but instead she looked over her shoulder again trying to figure out what it was that she had seen. Maybe she was going crazy, but she would not give Caleb the satisfaction of being the one to tell her that. “I don’t know. That’s why I was trying to figure it out. Obviously.” She rolled her eyes and just turned around refusing to even acknowledge his presence now. If he wanted to make fun of her for a good reason that was fine, but not now. Not when she was doubting herself, but there was something there. Skylar scoffed at him and flipped her head over her shoulder so she could glance at him; she may be new but she was by no means weak. She just wasn’t certain in all of her movements, but it was a process. “Well maybe if you were doing your job, I wouldn’t look like such a novice now would I?” A smirk tugged at her lips as she poked at him and his abilities like he was constantly doing to her. Sky turned reluctantly and started to walk after him, but only enough to grab his arm. “I know I saw something Caleb, and it wasn’t a good something! Can you at least humor me and pretend that it could be something? Maybe it isn’t and maybe it was a cat or something, but I honestly don’t know what it is.” Besides, she would feel better knowing that she had followed her instincts rather than let Caleb Penhallow boss her around.

“Well maybe if you were doing your job, I wouldn’t look like such a novice now would I?” He didn’t let her attempt at mocking his abilities get to him. It was rather pointless and failed miserably. “Haha. Except that I’m not the only one responsible for your training, Greymark. And my training is not what you’re lacking.” He had been responsible for teaching her to fight and handle weapons, though even that weight didn’t fall solely on his shoulders as he was not yet eighteen and wasn’t allowed to assume complete and total responsibility for it. That fell on the shoulders of their tutor and the rest of the capable Shadowhunters at the Institute. So her remark made absolutely no sense. The fact that she could gain nothing on him had a grin pulling on the corner of his lips. He was already moving on from this spot when she grabbed his arm and forced him to stop. He groaned softly in frustration. “Fine,” he said sharply. “If I entertain this crazy little notion of yours, then can we go?” Because Caleb didn’t honestly believe that she had seen anything at all, and the only reason he was even going to do this at all was to get her to shut up about it. He motioned for her to go ahead and followed after her. He withdrew his seraph blade from his belt and whispered it’s name softly under his breath, the blade glowing a brilliant white as they walked. He didn’t believe for a second that she had seen anything of value, but he his training had taught him to always be prepared, and he wasn’t about to go into something without a weapon. He followed her down the street to where she insisted she had seen something. With his weapon raised, Caleb stepped lightly into the alley, his dark eyes taking the area around him in. He let the light from his seraph blade shine around the alley before, checking every corner. He didn’t see anything. He slowly lowered it and turned back to face Skylar. “There’s nothing here,” he said, sounding annoyed.

God she wanted to slap him in the face. Caleb Penhallow was a cocky, arrogant son of a bitch who desperately needed to be taught a lesson. Skylar would absolutely love to be that person, especially after tonight. She looked at him and was absolutely detesting being here with him. Why did it have to be him?! There were how many other shadowhunters that could have taken her out. Instead she had gotten stuck with this idiot. “You so sure about that? And what am I lacking there, Penhallow?” She knew that it wasn’t entirely Caleb that was responsible for teaching her, but this wasn’t something that was used to. This whole thing was new to her, the marks, the seraph blades, all of it. So naturally dealing with this moron did not make her feel even better about all of this. She just stood there with her hands on her hips staring him down. She had caught him, but it wasn’t something that was so absurd to believe. Skylar was not crazy and she had seen something; though it was probably gone whatever it was. Caleb was going to have a field day if he was right, but she nodded and rolled her eyes. “I’m not crazy. I know that I saw something, and I don’t give a rat’s ass if you believe me or not.” They walked down to the alleyway and she looked angrily at him. He was a lot of things, but at least he was willing to humor her, even if it was so he could just tease her and make her miserable for the next two weeks. Sky took the witchlight stone out of her pocket and used it to add light to the alley way. There had to be something to show that she was not crazy, but it didn’t look that way. Especially whenever he turned towards her and had that damn look on his face. “I swear on the Angel, I saw something Caleb. I don’t know what it was, or where the heck it went but it was there!” She pointed to the spot that the shadow had been. It still wasn’t helping her case but she crossed her arms over her chest and looked at him. “So what are we doing?” It was something that Skylar was not happy about; this whole night was turning out to be a waste and only making her look crazy.

She pointed to where she had supposedly seen whatever it was she had seen. He rolled his eyes. There should really be rules about this sort of thing. Like no lunatics allowed. He shook his head and walked out of the alley with an annoyed sigh. Being a Shadowhunter was in their blood. It was something they were born to do. But the way she handled herself, you wouldn’t know it. Caleb had always known he was born to do this. His came from generations of Shadowhunters, just as she did. Caleb was an orphan; his parents had been killed when he was young, and as such he had been living at the Institute for almost his entire life, which meant that he got his fair share of training, and also got the pleasure of helping to train the newer recruits. He wasn’t of age yet, though, so he didn’t get to do that sort of thing full time. Not that he would want to. It was surprising to find that Caleb was actually a decent instructor. When he set his mind to it and managed to keep his patience, he could accomplish great things, even with someone so as unskilled as Skylar. But today his patience had been pushed to the limit and he was in a sour mood. The last thing he wanted right now was to be patrolling with the likes of her. “We continue our patrol,” he said sharply. Obviously that was what they did. They weren’t supposed to return to the Institute until they finished, and Caleb was not about to get bitched at because they had came back early. “Come on,” he said, shoving his seraph blade back into his belt as he walked back down the street. Some night this was turning out to be.

Skylar hadn’t been brought up to be a shadowhunter, considering her mother had tried to keep her from this life, and yet here she was training with a complete dick. She really hated Caleb most of the time, and yet somehow they always ended up on patrol together. It was annoying, and most of the time it took everything in her being not to punch him in the damn face. Skylar could see that look in his eyes that he always wore around her, but it wasn’t that she was crazy. Whatever had been there not even ten minutes ago was gone now, and she knew that there had been something. It wasn’t like she was intentionally trying to waste his time or hers, but now that is exactly what it looked like she was doing, and it was infuriating. She placed the witchlight back into her pocked and turned on the heels of her boots and started to scoff off, but not without a few glances back to make sure that whatever it was she had seen wasn’t just playing games when Caleb was around. She really was irritated that he thought she would make something up, but she followed after him, and just wanted to get this over with. Stupid idiot thought he was the best damn thing to walk the earth, but everyone knew otherwise. Caleb Penhallow was a stuck up dick, and she was tired of always dealing with him. “I’m not crazy, Caleb. I saw something, but it disappeared or something whenever you came along. I don’t know what it was, and you re too much of a dick to think I am telling the truth.” Her fists balled and the reality was that Sky just wanted to hit something, and if they didn’t find anything on this patrol it was likely it would either be him or a punching bag whenever she got back to the institute. Her eyes glanced over to him as she finally caught up to his strides and walked side by side with him. “What are we even supposed to be looking for? I mean we already got the Ravener demon, what else is out here tonight?” Maybe it was just her naivety, but Skylar just didn’t see the purpose.

There were a lot of things that people didn’t know about Caleb. Most people just saw the arrogant, stuck-up jerk that he let them see. He never allowed people to see much more than that. That was just how he was. And that was especially so when he was around Skylar. He found it difficult to work with her when she acted so naïve. She was green, and somewhere deep down Caleb knew and understood that. But tonight, the last thing he wanted to do was worry about such things. He rolled his eyes at her once again. She could preach to him all she wanted about how she had definitely seen something and that it had went away when he arrived. Maybe it had happened, but Caleb wasn’t about to believe that tonight. Her whining was actually kind of irritating, and did nothing to improve her mood. “What are we even supposed to be looking for? I mean we already got the Ravener demon, what else is out here tonight?” He had to resist the urge to roll his eyes at her once again. It was becoming something rather common, especially tonight. “We found one Ravener demon. Who’s to say there aren’t more hiding out somewhere, waiting to attack unsuspecting mundanes.” Caleb said all of this without even looking at Skylar. “Or maybe there’s something even worse out there.” This was part of their job. If she didn’t like it, then she was in the wrong profession. He stopped and turned to look at her. “Look, this is what we do. We protect the city from all the things that go bump in the night. It’s not all fighting and chopping up demons. Sometimes, we patrol and nothing exciting happens.” With a final glance, Caleb turned and continued walking.

It was still didn’t make sense to her, this whole shadowhunter thing, but at this point she didn’t have a choice. She was here; she was getting marks and she was going to have to learn how to handle all of the aspects that came along with it. Maybe patrolling with Caleb wasn’t the best idea for the “new girl” but what choice did she really have? According to the Institute, he was one of the best, and she couldn’t really argue that. Skylar and Caleb just managed to butt heads over everything, and tonight she was infuriated that he wouldn’t listen to her. The little brunette could see that he thought she was crazy, but the reality was that she knew what she had seen. It irritated her that he didn’t believe her, but it didn’t mean that she was wrong. If she had seen something then it was going to come back and bite him in the ass, and maybe then she would let it. She was one of those people that would hold a grudge, but she wasn’t so stubborn as to let someone die over it. When he started to lecture her about “protecting the city from things that go bump in the night” it was her turn to roll her eyes. As if she didn’t hear it enough how she needed to take it all more seriously, but she didn’t get it. She continued to follow Caleb and finally fell into stride along side with him before speaking. “So, do you always act so high and mighty and that no matter what someone else says they are wrong? I asked you a question because I don’t know the rules. I don’t know what I’m supposed to be doing and why you would patrol if you got the one thing you were sent out to kill. But fine, let’s go patrol.” She was irritated and was thankful that their night was winding down, slowly but surely she would be free of Caleb and his holy than though attitude. That’s when she started to move faster than him before looking over her shoulder and still heading towards the park. “Well, are you coming slow poke, or are you just going to give speeches about our ‘duties and responsibilities’ and then just slack off?” Oh this was going to be entertaining as hell.

She was such a child. He understood that she hadn’t grown up around any of this, and he understood that. He may not have always acted like it, but he did. Caleb had lived around this. This was his world. He’d been raised around the code and the Law. He knew what was expected of him. He was a Shadowhunter. This was who and what he was. It was who he had always been. But Skylar? She hadn’t known any of that, and he couldn’t hold it against her completely. It was how she handled this, how she handled herself. Her actions. She seemed to see his lack of trust as an issue, but if she knew the things he did, she would not trust so easily. Trust was earned, and she was far from earning his. It was no good to walk into battle with someone you didn’t trust. They were supposed to have your back. When you were fighting demons and Downworlders alike, the last thing you wanted was to be worrying about the competence of your partner. And after this night, he was seriously doubting hers. His eyes narrowed at her when she quickened her pace, anger spiking inside of him. He lengthened his stride, catching her easily. He reached out and grabbed her arm, then quickly flung her body and punned her against the nearest wall. He was stronger than she was, and even if she struggled she couldn’t escape his grasp. He pressed his body against hers, immobilizing her. “This is not a game!” he spat at her, his face inches from hers. Caleb was grateful for the glamours that hid them from sight, otherwise this would have raised some eyebrows. Not to mention he didn’t really feel like fighting mundane who knew nothing about what they were dealing with. “If you can’t take this seriously, then you have no business being here.” His voice was low and dangerous, and if she had the nerve to joke now then she was even more under qualified than he had originally thought. “In a fight, everyone will be depending on you! That is not a responsibility to be taken lightly. If you don’t do your job, people die.” Caleb couldn’t have been more serious. He gave it a moment for his words to sink in, then he released her from his grip, pushing her away from him. “Go home, Skylar. You’re a liability. I’ll finish the patrol alone.” He glared at her one last time, then turned away and continued on towards the park.

Skylar knew that she had responsibilities now that she had accepted this lifestyle and it was just something that she had to live with. The one thing that she did not have to live with was the fact that Caleb always managed to think that he was better than her. Just because she was inexperienced didn’t mean that she didn’t know when she had seen something. That still flashed through her mind trying to figure out what it could have been that was sneaking around in the shadows looking for her, but at this point there was no reason to. The boy she was sent out to patrol with thought that she was crazy, and Sky wasn’t crazy. She knew what she had seen, but it didn’t matter. Caleb was going to think what he wanted about her and tell the people at the institute anything that he wanted. She didn’t care at this point, but the fact that he had grabbed her by the arms and then pressed himself against her so she couldn’t move pissed her off. She twisted and wiggled trying her hardest to get out of his grasp, but it was no use. He was stronger, and she just glared at him. “Let me go.” She twisted a little more but his grip hurt and she continued to glare. “You are hurting me, Caleb. Let me go!” Her eyes never left his, but both of them were just so angry. Frustrated with each other for reasons that they didn’t want to admit, but Skylar just wanted him to admit that she wasn’t incompetent. She wasn’t, and she was trying hard, but the absolute last thing she was willing to do was let him treat her like this. The brunette nodded her head in understanding, but she stood there when he did finally let her go. Caleb wasn’t getting rid of her, not now when she apparently had so much to prove to him, and she took a few steps after him and grabbed his arm. “I’m not a liability and I’m not incompetent, Caleb. I get that there is a lot at stake, but the fact that you think that you are so much better than me and you don’t have to actually teach me doesn’t say much for you. I am trying, and you aren’t going to send me home just so you don’t have to deal with me. So get used to me, because I’m not going anywhere.”

When Caleb felt her grab at his arm, he quickly pulled out of her grasp. He had had just about enough of her for one night. It was true that Caleb had never been the most patient man in the world. He lost his temper easily. But he was a hell of a fighter, and when it came to a battle, no one was going to complain about him having their back. There was a certain level of trust that came to this sort of thing, and you couldn’t fight with someone you didn’t trust. And Caleb was never one to trust easily. But this was why they sent him out with the younger Shadowhunters. He was capable of fighting well on his own if he needed to, and could pick up the slack when need be. That didn’t mean that he necessarily liked doing it. “You know nothing about me,” he snapped, his dark eyes flaring with anger. Yes, Caleb had a superiority complex, but his recent loss of temper had absolutely nothing to do with that. Anyone else would understand, but Skylar didn’t know. He couldn’t blame her for that, but Caleb wasn’t about to go spilling his history to her to make her understand better. She didn’t know him. She didn’t know anything about him or what he had been through. And it wasn’t until she had her own scars that she would understand. So she wasn’t completely right. “You are a liability when you act childishly,” he said, a hard edge in his voice. “Trying to one up me because you feel like you have something to prove is not the way to prove to me, or anyone else, that you are not incompetent. You want to prove yourself, then do it by showing that you have something to prove. Throwing a tantrum and playing games is not the way to do it. It makes you look like a silly little girl and no one will take you seriously.” She claimed that he didn’t actually teach her anything, but she was failing to see the lesson he was trying to teach her right now. Whether or not she wanted to believe it, Caleb could offer her valuable information. She just had to suck up her pride and be open to it.

For the fact that he could be the most judgmental person on the face of the Earth, she hadn’t expected him to snap at her like that. Then for him to sit there and say she knew nothing about him? How in the hell was that fair for him to get to pull that kind of stunt when he knew nothing about her either? It wasn’t like this was something she had been prepared for, and there was a part of Skylar that was terrified by it all. Sure it was in her blood and she was born to do this, but she wasn’t a fighter. The brunette never had been, so for him to just expect her to be perfect and know what to do and how to do it was unrealistic. She looked at him and her eyes narrowed just slightly. “And you don’t know a damn thing about me. So stop judging me all the time. I’m a person too you know.” Caleb could be a douche bag, that much was evident, but he was smart and a good teacher when he wanted to be. So maybe she hadn’t gone about things in the most perfect manner, but who could really blame her? He thought that she was crazy when there was nothing to be found. Sure, it didn’t look exactly the greatest, but at the same time he should be able to trust her enough to know she wouldn’t lie about something like that. It wasn’t in her to lie about anything, and that was something that her mother had taught her. Honesty was something that the world could use a little more of and she just stared at Caleb as he continued on in his tantrum. “You know if you would take me seriously for just one freaking second maybe I wouldn’t feel the need to prove myself. As for me playing games, It was a joke. You think you can storm off and just let everything go, your responsibility as a teacher and guide, and that I’m not going to make a God damn joke about it you are insane. I may be new to this, but I’m not an idiot and you can stop treating me like I am.” Skylar had a habit of playing with her stele whenever she was upset, and she was quite frankly upset. No matter what she did, it was never going to be good enough for him. So Sky turned her back, he wanted her to go home, fine. At this point it didn’t even matter to her; at least at home she had a tiny bit of respect.

“And you don’t know a damn thing about me. So stop judging me all the time. I’m a person too you know.” He couldn’t help but to glare at her. Once his temper was ignited, it was hard to come down. And Caleb was mad. He had never been so angry with someone his life. He was furious. He knew he needed to cool down, but he also knew that the only way that was going to happen is when Skylar got away from him. For as long as she was around, he knew he was going to want to rip her head off. “I know more about you then you think,” he replied coolly. As her teacher, it was his job to know about her. It was his job to know where she came from and to observe her. To asses her potential and make her into a soldier. Caleb had no doubt that she would make a damn fine Shadowhunter if she stopped acting like a child and got her shit together. He’d make her one if for his pride alone. But in this moment, he wanted nothing to do with her. “It is not my job to take you seriously,” he snapped in response. “I am here to train you and to make you the best that you can be. It is your job to make me take you seriously. It is your job to prove that you can handle this job. Trust has to be earned. The sooner you learn that, the greater chance you have of staying alive.” If she took anything away from this little conversation of theirs, then he hoped that it was that, because it was the most important thing he could ever offer her. It would not only save her when it came to her training, but also in life in general. Trust wasn’t something you just gave away. Not ever. “And there is no place for jokes when you’re on patrol,” he said coldly. “If you wanna crack jokes, become a comedian.” She turned and started walking away, and Caleb couldn’t have been happier for it. He turned as well, heading in the opposite direction. He could patrol on his own, and hopefully she had enough sense to make it home without getting into trouble.
