i've been housing on this doubt and insecurity.

her first day of her junior year. she wished that she was still walking into her familiar school with her friends and her class schedule already decided. instead, she was in a new, unfamiliar place where she had no idea what was cool and what wasn't. sadie wandered into the school a full twenty minutes early, hoping to avoid looking terribly lost when classes began. still, the person showing her around had mysteriously disappeared and she had no idea where she was supposed to go. wonderful. the girl would have been crying at this point had it not been for memories of a vacation that had left her with a smile on her face. dean. she had completely fallen in love with him while she was in the keys. he'd been amazing and she'd been upset when she had to say goodbye. still, they traded numbers and promised to stay in touch. with that in mind, she pulled out her phone and texted him "already lost. no clue where i'm going :/" and then ran smack dab into someone. looking up, she saw dean in front of her and she rubbed her eyes. why in the world was she having such a strange hallucination? looking back up at him, though, he didn't seem to be fake at all. "dean?" she managed, sounding as surprised as she felt. she wasn't really what she was supposed to do other than that. her mind was racing too hard to focus and all of the memories of vacation came flooding back.

it was the first day back at school and dean already wished he could go back to doing nothing and being with the girl he had met during his time at the keys. even if he hadn't admitted it to himself, he had developed as small crush on sadie, and he just really wanted to see her again. when they had said their goodbyes and got back to the place they lived dean had still thought about her. even his thoughts managed to bring back the smile on his face. however, now he was back in school, he had to be the 'cool' guy again. he had braked about her to his friends, although he had left out some things and added some new information to make his story more interesting and less dinky, and his friends had loved every bit of it. dean looked at his phone when he heard the beeping sound. however, before he could actually read what the text had said, someone bumped into him. "watch where you're going you stup-" dean blinked with his eyes a couple of times before he finally accepted the fact that sadie was standing in front of him. the sadie. the one he had met on his holidays and told his friends about. "what are you doing here?" he said, sounding more annoying than he had intended to. this was not what was supposed to happen. they had said their goodbyes, and he had planned on never seeing her again. so what the hell was she doing standing in front of him?

she hadn't planned on telling anyone at her new school about dean. she didn't think that any friends she made would really believe her. she didn't even believe it herself--they'd had a summer romance that was storybook quality. and well, part of her would have felt like she was diminishing it by talking about it. it was special and just for her. of course, she secretly hoped that dean felt the same way but she'd never ask him. they were supposed to remain friends but she highly doubted that they'd ever meet again. well, she was obviously quite wrong. she didn't process anything he said or did for a full minute. she was just astounded that it was him and she probably looked stupid, her mouth hanging slightly open. his tone snapped her back to reality though and she just shrugged. "this is my new school. i told you i was moving, right?" sadie said it like it was the most normal thing ever, the two of them just happening to end up in the same place. in reality, it was a weird twist of fate, one that she was initially very happy about. "how are you doing? will you show me around? i actually just texted you that i was lost, weird enough." she felt like she had to talk, had to make this situation more normal so he'd realize that she didn't expect them to instantly be a couple. it'd probably take a few weeks, but she was willing to wait...it never dawned on her that he might be less than thrilled with this new development.

it had just been a fling. a summer romance. nothing more. at least, dean had not thought it would be more than that. he had actually liked sadie. she was just different than most girls. she hadn't expected anything out of him. it almost seemed like she had been his soul mate. however, that didn't mean he actually wanted to be with her now he was back in school. he was one of the popular guys after all, and she was the new girl. she wasn't a cheerleader, or any of those other typical girls he was supposed to be dating. no - she was regular. and regular didn't fit into his status at school. "you did. you just never told me that you would transfer to this school." he said, wishing that she had told him where she was going to go to school. dean couldn't believe that this was happening. these things didn't happen. it hadn't even occurred to dean that sadie could've gone to the same school as him. but how big had those odds been? like one in a million. yet that one percent definitely was going to be the death of him. how was he supposed to handle this situation? he couldn't just tell her he didn't want to be with her. no - he wasn't going to crush her feelings like that. "i... eh... well..." dean ran a hand through his hair, trying to find a sollution for his problems but nothing popped up in his head. "i'm not sure if i'm the right person to show you around..." he told her, hoping he wasn't hurting her feelings. there was just no way he could avoid his friends while showing sadie around. and he sure as hell didn't want to be seen with her. how was he supposed to explain the fact that she knew him, that she had the same name as the girl in the stories? this was going to be a fucking disaster, and dean had no idea how to fix any of this.

normal was her middle name. not really, but she thrived on being able to fit in but not stand out. she had hobbies, like any girl, but they didn't involve being a superstar athlete or nerd. she got average grades and was on student council at her old school but wasn't exactly a leader or miss popular. she'd told dean how nervous she was to move, to become a nobody. he had listened, but she got the feeling he really didn't understand. and that was that. she moved on to talk about other things with him and well, just enjoyed his company while she was in it. how different things could have went had they knew that they had more time than just the summer. now they had the whole year, but sadie wasn't sure how she really factored into his already existing life at this school. "guess i should have been more specific." the girl tried to laugh but it fell a little flat. she couldn't understand his answer to her question and the girl raised an eyebrow. "why not? are you new here too?" another joke. she smiled a little, hoping that this one would be more well-received. was he really not going to help her out here? he knew that she was freaking out, but he didn't seem all that concerned. "or is it more you have somewhere to be?" she added, curiously. the receptionist hadn't mentioned anything about before school extracurriculars but it was possible. or maybe he was just meeting up with friends. that would also make sense, although she'd be a little confused as to why that couldn't wait.

the whole summer, dean had never really realized how different the two of them really were. sure, he knew that she was a bit of a geeky girl but once the subject about school had been dropped sadie had seen as a really fun girl to be around with. at school though, she didn't fit in with his group of friends or the image he was trying to keep. he only dated cheerleaders and those stereotype of girls. if it would come out that the girl he had been seeing the whole summer had been sadie, things could get pretty ugly. his friends would probably not stop making stupid jokes about her. but then again, did he really need to listen to his friends or what everybody at school wanted? it was his life he was living, and sadie was indeed a great girl, so maybe he should just let go of the image people had of him and start a new one. but sadly, dean knew he wasn't that kind of guy. if people saw him as an arrogant bastard and liked him because of it, he would be that person. "no, i'm not new here. it's just... well, never mind. i guess i can show you around if you persist." he said, flashing a smile at her. even though dean could be arrogant and mean, he only was those things at males. around females, he was always nice and sweet. one thing he couldn't stand was hurting a girls feelings, even if he had broken a couple of hearts during the years at high school, but he had felt bad about doing such a thing for months. nevertheless, guiding sadie around couldn't hurt. "so where are you heading? what do you want to see?" he asked as he closed his locker and waited for her answer.

she'd been told an endless amount of times not to judge people based off of first impressions but to get to know them first. and she'd done that with dean. of course, her first impression of him was quite good and it just kept getting better the longer they spent together. here, however, she was getting a different vibe from him. sadie didn't want to jump to conclusions but he seemed a little uneasy about her being at the same school. on one level, that made complete sense. it was his territory first and he probably had already gotten used to the way his life was. but, on the other hand, she hoped that he would have been more excited. they had promised to keep in touch and now it would be made even easier. they'd be in the same place five days a week. "oh okay, great." she said as he relented and agreed to show her around. maybe things weren't completely hopeless and he was just caught off-guard by her sudden arrival. she was hoping that was the case. "well, i mostly just need to know where my classes are. especially my first hour." sadie smiled up at him, cradling her own books "i figure as long as i can make it there, maybe someone will show me to my next class." she held out her schedule to him, figuring that he'd be able to make more sense of it than she would. he had two years at this school under his belt. "don't you miss the beach?" she asked lightheartedly as he examined her schedule. she would have given anything for it to be summertime again. less responsibilities, more time for doing what she wanted...this summer had been the greatest.

dean had no idea how to handle this situations at all. he didn't want to make sadie feel like he didn't care about her, which he did, but he didn't want his friends to see how much of a sweet boy he could be either. something he had been when he had been with sadie. he had no idea how it had happened, but sadie had just changed his personality completely. dean had always been the type of boy who would chase girls who played hard-to-get and he was always willing to accept a challenge, but with sadie it went differently. when they met, dean had fallen for her immediately. she had obviously not been his type at all, but it was summer and he liked her so he had thought it didn't matter because he did like the girl, even if she was a bit dorky. nevertheless, now that she was actually attending the same high school things were obviously different because dean wasn't exactly the boy he had been on holiday. he actually was a douchbag, he had no problem admitting that because he knew he was one but sadie didn't know that so he had absolutely no idea how things were going to play out. "i can show you the classes. it's not that hard to find the right ones anyway. the classrooms are numbered so it's not very hard to find them." he said with a small shrug, taking her schedule for her and examining it. to his dislike, they had a lot of classes together, which would make things even more awkward then they were already going to be. "it seems like we have first period together." he just said, not really talking about the other classes they shared. she would find that out for herself. "yeah, i do miss the beach. every day." he said, flashing her a smile as he started to walk, mentioning her to follow him.

even with dean acting a little strange, sadie already felt a million times better about being at her new school. she knew precisely one person but it was one more than she would have known elsewhere. and well, she was hoping that she'd meet people because of dean, too. classes could only go so far in making friendships but if dean could open his circle of friends to her, she'd be all set. not that she wanted to ask him to do that. the girl didn't want to press her luck just yet. "yeah, i saw that, but sometimes the numbers restart and i don't know, i'm navigationally-challenged or something." she found herself laughing again, in spite of the fact that dean seemed to be extra serious. sadie couldn't stop herself from cracking jokes and wanting him to laugh along with her. "first period? really, that's great!" perhaps she was being a bit overenthusiastic but she couldn't help herself. dean being right in front of her had sent her mood soaring. she was glad he at least seemed to hold fond memories of the beach since she felt the exact same way. it was really the best place to be for the summer. she trailed behind him slightly, trying not to bring too much attention to herself as the clueless new girl. people seemed largely caught up in their own little groups, talking and laughing as she and dean moved past them. "i'm really sorry if i'm taking time away from seeing your friends." she wanted to ask what his friends were like, but that was pushing him too much. she just wanted to go with the flow for now, and she'd do whatever he felt comfortable with. there was no sense in trying to force herself to be his new girlfriend or best friend or anything like that.
