no one can hurt you now

This headache was killing her. Cady felt like someone had taken a sledge hammer to her skull. She groaned, popping two more asprin and pushing them down with a big sip from her bottle of water. It wasn’t always like this, and you’d think after years of visions that things would have gotten better for her. But no. The headaches came whether she wanted them or not. Her most recent vision had just about made her pass out, and now she was left with this killer headache that refused to go away. And now she had to get ready to go to school. Oh God school. The thought of it made her want to climb right back into bed and never come out again. Being the new kid in town, the strange new oddity that everyone liked to talk about, was never easy. She’d been here plenty of times that she should be used to it. Again no, she wasn’t. Things had started to slow down a bit. People had stopped asking about her, had stopped prying for answers about her past. They had stopped trying to figure her out. Which was a relief in and of itself. She hated fending off the questions, the stares, the curious glances that never seemed to go away. She just wanted to be invisible again. Cady pulled herself together and quickly got herself ready for school, ignoring the pounding of her head. She didn’t bother to stop for food, and instead through up the head of her sweatshirt and stepped out into the chilly morning air. This place was a lot smaller than the town she had been in before. She found that here she could walk to school every day, which was kind of a relief. She had always hated riding school buses. Surrounded by all those people, who were loud and obnoxious, touching her constantly. It was a girl’s worse nightmare, especially when that girl happened to be able to see the future. Her feet carried her down the street and in the direction of her school. Her trek went mostly undisturbed, until she was within a couple of blocks of her school. Cady was staring at the ground, watching her feet as she walked. She never saw him. The boys were standing at the corner of the street, stopped, most likely fooling around in that way that boys often do. She didn’t realize they were there until she ran into them, or more, she ran into him. She’d seen him around school, admired him from afar. She knew who he was. She was staring up at his face. One minute he was there, and then it changed. The image flashed across her vision. She saw him, standing in front of the school, ready to cross the street. She watched as he stepped off the curb, looking behind him as he conversed with his friends. He didn’t see the car. She watched it collide with his body, and then she was jerked out of the vision, his face once again coming into focus. He looked confused, as he very well should have been. She could only image what she had looked like to him. “I’m sorry,” she said softly, then quickly hurried away, making a run for the school. This couldn’t be happening. Not again. Her visions had always been rather morbid at times. She’d witnessed more deaths than she could possible remember. But this. Him She knew without a thought at all that she was going to have to save him. Somehow, someway. She was going to have to make sure he made it through the day. Whatever the consequences that followed. She couldn’t just let him die. And so she did. Cady watched him that day, as she had never watched him before. Occasionally he would look up and catch her looking at him. He would think she was weird, just like the rest of them. Her stomach knotted at the thought, but she knew she had to do it. She had to save him. Her opportunity came sooner than she thought it would. At the end of the school day, she ran from the building. Her eyes scanned the crowd and she saw him. A shot of horror ran through her as she saw her vision playing before her eyes. He walked backwards off the curb, his eyes on his friends and a smile on his face. She could see the car, moving fast as it turned the corner and headed for him. She took off, running as fast as her legs would carry her, pushing people out of her way despite her small frame. She slid to a stop, reaching out to grab his arm. She pulled, using every ounce of strength she had and the two of them tumbled to the ground, the car racing past, just missing them. Her breathing was heavy, but as she looked up at him, relief followed through her. He was okay. She had saved him. Nothing else mattered.

-------------------------------------------------------------------

HEY! SO THIS IS CADY. IN CASE YOU HAVEN'T FIGURED IT OUT, SHE HAS THE POWER OF PRECOGNITION. I WOULD LOVE TO HAVE THE GUY SHE SAVES. THANKS! <3

thought i had you figured out
Liam was not a fan of school, but if he was forced to go the least he could do was make the best of it. He wasn't a "get involved" kind of guy when it came to clubs or other after school activities. He tried sports - track, football, swimming - none of them really stuck. There was too much physical effort involved with training and such. If he could just go and play the game, he'd do much better, but once the coaches talked about running laps and doing a thousand push-ups, he was out. Not only that, it took away from spending time with his friends, of which Liam had a cornucopia. See, he wasn't a jock by any means but somehow managed to make himself somewhat of a popular guy. How was still a revelation needing explanation. As usual, when he got off the bus that morning his band of brothers hailed him down and he went to join them on the street corner in front of the school. It was the usual gang hanging out, some making out with their current interests. Liam wasn't one of those, having been single for almost the whole semester. His ex was now tonguing the quarterback against a maple tree on the front lawn. Liam pretended not to notice, turning his back to them and engaging in the ongoing conversation between his buddies. He wasn't one to dwell on relationships, especially when he was the one to get dumped simply from lack of interest. He couldn't help it if he was boring outside school and a public social setting. It was easier to entertain a guy than it was a girl, unless it was through sex and that wasn't what Liam McLean was all about. He was a respectable guy and preferred to remain that way. So when he was suddenly bumped into by an unidentified person, turned around to brush off her apology. He looked down at the girl, Cady, he recalled her name. He saw her around school before, asked people about her as he never had classes with her. What baffled him was how most people through she was well... strange. He didn't understand why they would think that until that moment. "Hey, Cady." He offered when she didn't say anything at first. But then she continued to stare at him as if in a sort of trance. He furrowed his brow slightly, glanced over his shoulder at his friends who merely shrugged and shook their heads. He looked back at her, about to ask if she was all right when she seemed to have snapped out of it, apologized, then ran off. He turned with her, watched her go, considered going after her but was stopped when the bell rang. For the rest of the day he couldn't keep his mind off Cady. It was kind of hard to do with her constant staring. Even when he didn't look up to catch her in the act, he could feel her eyes on him. It was actually staring to creep him out and he now understood what everyone was saying about her. He didn't like to immediately jump on the bandwagon, but she didn't give him much else to go on at this point. "Dude, why is she so obsessed with you?" Liam's friend Brendan asked during their lunch break, jerking his chin in Cady's direction. Liam looked back over his shoulder to see Cady drop her eyes, but it was obvious she had been looking at him. "Just leave her alone, okay?" Whether he found her creepy or not, Liam still didn't like his friends ragging on her about it. So maybe she had a bit of an obsessive crush, so what? He stared at girls he was interested in before, though not so stalker-like. When the final bell rang, Liam again congregated with his friends outside the school, making afternoon plans and joking about the homework they weren't going to do. "Okay, I'll meet you guys there in an hour!" He had his back to the street and stepped off the curb, about to turn around to finish crossing when suddenly Cady came out of no where and grabbed his arm. She yanked him with such force Liam tripped over his own feet and tumbled to the ground, landing on top of her. He found himself staring into those dark eyes that had been watching him all day; for an instant his mind was befuddled until a bunch of his friends ran back to the street and hauled him off the ground, frantically asking if he was all right.
Booya! Finally get to use a Logan again! Feels goood! <3

no one can hurt you now

Cady stared up into the blue eyes of the boy she had just saved. She had saved him. She still couldn’t really believe it. Cady wasn’t a hero. She didn’t save people. Not that she hadn’t tried before. She had. Many times. She saw the deaths of people more often than she would like. It made her sick most of the time. It wasn’t always the nature of their demise that troubled her, but the knowledge that she couldn’t save them. Most of them were people she didn’t even know. They slipped into her dreams and tormented her. But this had been different. Liam was a real person. He was there and she knew him. It was that fact alone that had made her determined that he wouldn’t die. She would save him. And she had, though she had seriously doubted her ability to do so. She had been sure she wouldn’t reach him in time, sure that her vision would once again play itself out. Seeing those beautiful blue eyes looking down at her, so full of life, she knew she had done it. She couldn’t breathe, couldn’t speak. Everything seemed to slow down for a moment, and all she was aware of was him. His body pinned hers to the ground where she had pulled him. The moment was broken quickly, though, as the group of boys rushed forward to pull him from the pavement. Cady was ignored, their focus on Liam. He had almost died; he was the victim. The person who had done the saving didn’t seem all that important to them. But Cady was fine with that. If they ignored her, there would be no questions. They wouldn’t fuss over her or ask her how she’d done it. She couldn’t explain that. She couldn’t tell them that she had known that it was going to happen, that she had seen it. They already thought she was strange. That would make them think she was crazy. Not to mention that if she said as much they would once again be picking up and moving. She didn’t want that to happen. She’d just gotten settled in here, finally gotten to where people ignored her. She didn’t want to move and have to start all over again. So Cady quickly picked herself up off the pavement, grabbing her bag where it had fallen and slipping it over her should. Her dark eyes went to him, a small smile touching her lips as she saw, once again, that he was okay. He was okay! That was enough to make her absolutely giddy, though now was not the time to be so. With that final glance, she turned and ran from the scene. No one stopped her, which was good. She felt that the best thing was to get as far away from here as she possibly could.

thought i had you figured out
The fussing was driving him crazy, he just wanted to brush himself off and thank Cady, but his friends wouldn't let him move, they had him crushed in the center of a tight circle, talking all at once. At first their voices were full of worry, but then turned to excitement. It wasn't every day you saw someone nearly get run over by a car. Liam hadn't even realized what happened until Brendan exclaimed something about almost being road kill. Being observant wasn't one of his strong suits. He focused on one thing and that was what held his attention until something else stole it away. It was his own stupidity he nearly got hit, too busy talking to his friends to pay attention to where he was going. Of course, he probably would have been better off stopping to talk, rather than continue walking - backwards of all ways. He wasn't Mater; he didn't possess a pair of handy side-view mirrors or the ability to see out of the back of his head. Obviously Cady had been the only one paying attention to Liam's actions and for the first time that day he was grateful. "Guys, guys, seriously. I'm fine." Normally he was okay with being the center of attention, but not this time. He just wanted to be left alone to he could talk to Cady. He managed to push people aside, but when he went to find Cady she was gone. He spun around, trying to see over the tops of heads to find where she headed, but it was difficult with a crowd surrounding him. "Did you guys see where she went?" People shook their heads, someone asked "Who?" and Liam frowned at them, pushing them aside out of irritation. Really, no one saw what happened other than Liam almost being flattened? He distinctly remembered being pulled to safety by Cady and yet no one seemed to have acknowledged her, asked if she was okay. Pressing his mouth into a thin line, deciding to find her the next day, Liam scooped his bag from the ground and threw it over his shoulder. He re-confirmed the afternoon plans with his friends, then continued on his route. This time he made sure to look before crossing. The next day, Liam's mind was still reeling from yesterday's near-death experience. Flipping his hood up, Liam made the walk to the bus stop, keeping his eyes peeled in case he happened to cross paths with Cady - which was probably not likely as he never had before. Liam never took the school bus to school, always the town one, as he royally disliked sitting on the bright yellow bus. The bus pulled up to the curb just as Liam did and he hopped on and took a seat near the window. He stared out at the sidewalk, eying all the people they passed just for something to keep him busy. Then he caught sight of someone up ahead that reminded him of Cady from behind. He stared at her as the bus drew closer then passed - it was her. He was almost turned completely around in his seat before he thought to pull the wire above his head and stop the bus. By the time he got off, she was almost caught up but he jogged to intercept anyway. "Cady!" He waved her down, slowing to a walk when he got closer. "Hey. I just, uh, wanted to thank you, you know, for yesterday." He never talked to her before, other than a passing hello or nod, more often it was simple eye contact. Needless to say he felt a little awkward. "Are you all right? I mean, you pulled me right on top of you. I hope I didn't hurt you or anything." He was facing ahead, keeping pace with her as they headed for school, but dropped his gaze to glance at her, making it a point not to stare for too long.
Hehe, I know. <3

no one can hurt you now

Cady ran until her little white house came into view. It was only then that she slowed her pace, her breathing heavy from the exertion. Though she knew no one had followed her, she still glanced behind her. She was terrified that someone would have followed, that they somehow would have figured out what it was she could do and would be chasing her down. Her fear was pointless, though. No one came running after her. No one had even acknowledged her presence. The smile from earlier slid back on her lips, a warmth she couldn’t quite explain flooding through her. She was still kind of in disbelief. But it felt good, what she had done. So good, in fact, that nothing could really tear her mood down that night. She entered her house, finding her parents still gone, and went upstairs to her room. She worked on her homework until her mother called her down for dinner. Her parents noticed her good mood, though, and questioned her about it. Her vague responses only made them more curious, and eventually she was forced to tell them the truth. That she had saved Liam from getting ran over by a car. Immediately she saw the alarm in their eyes. The conversation turned very serious after that, and it was only after Cady’s insistence that no one had seen her that they let it go. She could tell that they were worried, though. Her mother suggested she skip school tomorrow, but Cady knew she couldn’t. Besides, if anyone had seen, that would only make them suspicious, she explained. Her father agreed with her and the subject was dropped. Still, she was warned to be careful, and to keep her head down. Cady nodded and agreed and no more was said. That night was rather peaceful for Cady, no visions slipping into her dreams as they often did. It was a rare moment for her. The next day she woke and found that she didn’t have to pop aspirin, as she usually did. It was enough to bring a smile to her face. She quickly got ready for school. She found her parents still home when she went downstairs, and after yet another warning to be careful, Cady left her house and followed her usual path to school. She kept her hood up and her head down, avoiding anyone that she happened to pass on the street. She made a point not to watch her feet this time, as that was what had gotten her in trouble the last time. She hadn’t expected someone to call out her name, though. Her head shot up, quickly looking around for the source. Her dark eyes landed on him as he came towards her and she froze. This couldn’t be happening. She stared at him with wide eyes, fear suddenly shooting through her. He knew. He knew something was wrong with her. That something was different. She was screwed. She was so screwed. "Hey. I just, uh, wanted to thank you, you know, for yesterday." She started walking again, her pace somewhat slow. Her shoulders were tense. He knew, he knew, he knew. Panic shot through her like she had never felt before. His next words surprised her and made her relax just a little bit. Maybe he didn’t know. Maybe he wasn’t suspicious at all. Maybe he just thought she had been there, had just seen what was happening and acted. That had to be what he thought, right? He wouldn’t automatically think there was something different about her. Normal people didn’t think that… right? She took a slow breath. “I’m fine,” she said a little too quickly, her dark eyes looking up at him and a small smile slipping onto her lips. She quickly adverted her gaze to look at the pavement. She thought about ending it there, but curiosity got the best of her. She looked back up at him. “Are you okay?” she asked a little more slowly. That was the whole reason she had done what she did, after all. To make sure he was okay.

thought i had you figured out
Liam almost anticipated silence from Cady when he engaged her, going off of what happened the day before. She wasn't much of a talker was what he heard from a lot of people. He wondered if that was why people thought she was weird, because that wasn't weird to him. There were a lot of people he knew that didn't have much to say, or didn't waste their time with pointless words. Maybe she was that sort of person, letting her actions speak for her. But the more people he talked to in school, the more he learned of her odd ways. To be honest, he still didn't get what the fuss, or lack there of, was about. She was new and just because she didn't want to be the shiny new toy didn't make her an outcast. Well, apparently it did, but it shouldn't. Liam would admit to being guilty of messing with the new kids, having been in the area his whole life, but this thing with Cady seemed a little extreme. He'd agree she had awkward tendencies, but they could be easily overlooked, at least by him. He didn't know why he found himself so intrigued by her or interested at all, but something just drew him in and, frankly, he wasn't about to fight it. His eyebrows rose and he suppressed a grin, surprised yet amused, when she answered him rather quickly. He dipped his head in a nod and looked ahead again. "Well that's good." He replied, unsure of what else to say until she reciprocated his question. "Yeah, thanks to you. I'm glad someone was paying attention to where I was going, because I obviously wasn't." Apparently, neither were any of his friends, of whom he was looking directly at as he stepped into the street. Obviously they had tunnel vision like he did, they were made for each other. He didn't put her on the spot right away by asking why she had been staring at him all day yesterday, afraid she'd clam up and that would be the end of their conversation. He wanted it to at least last until they made it to school. "I wanted to thank you yesterday, but you were gone." He said, glancing at her briefly, hinting that he was looking for an explanation, though he didn't outright ask for one. He'd let her keep secrets if that's how she wanted things, though that would only make him want to know even more.

Cady wasn’t good at this. She was awful when it came to conversing with people. She had spent her whole life, for the most part, avoiding them. She didn’t talk, she didn’t engage. She kept to herself. So when the rare occasion came up that she had to talk to someone, she was very awkward. Given the fact that she had done something she shouldn’t, that she had risked exposing her power, it made her even more nervous than she typically was. "Yeah, thanks to you. I'm glad someone was paying attention to where I was going, because I obviously wasn't." She could feel the heat rise to her cheeks and quickly looked away, her eyes once again watching her feet as she walked. The way he talked, he thought she was just overly observant. That was a good thing. That meant he hadn’t found her strange. Or maybe he did, but just in a normal kind of strange, not paranormal. Maybe then he wouldn’t ask questions, and she wouldn’t have to come up with something. Cady was an absolute awful liar. She should be good at it after all these years of hiding who she was. She should be a lot of things after all these years of living with her ability. She should have more control over it, she shouldn’t get brain splintering headaches, and she should be used to being the new kid time and time again. But none of those things were true. "I wanted to thank you yesterday, but you were gone." Cady wasn’t sure what to say. He was looking for an explanation. That had to be it. But she didn’t have one. Not really. She had ran off because she didn’t want anyone to question her, hadn’t wanted to bring attention to herself. So what did she say? Her mind raced for an explanation, Cady very aware that the silence was growing between them. She couldn’t come up with one, though. Not one that wouldn’t make him more suspicious of her. “Well you’re welcome,” she said at last, looking up at him long enough to give him a small, half-hearted smile. She was so very uncomfortable with this conversation. She didn’t know what to do or how to act, and all she could hope was that they got to school soon. Then she could disappear into the crowd and he would likely run off to join his friends. As they walked, her arm brushed up against his. Immediately Cady tensed, expecting a vision to come. It didn’t always happen when she touched someone, but after yesterday she didn’t really want to try it. When nothing came she relaxed, breathing a sigh of relief. She quickly took a step to put more distance between them.

thought i had you figured out
It appeared that their conversation was going to be over sooner than Liam anticipated judging from the stretch of her silence. He didn't expect her to answer him as quickly as she had before, suddenly bursting with whatever reason she had for running off yesterday. He could come up with his own conclusions but they would more than likely be wrong, or at least flawed. Technically, it wasn't any of his business why she left, though he could spin it to make it his business. She had pulled him out of the way of an oncoming car, a potentially fatal accident, then ran off before he could thank her. It almost made her look suspicious, like she knew it was going to happen, but that was an absurd thought because that would either mean someone was out to get him and Cady was somehow involved, or she could see the future. Now, he wasn't the most liked person at school, but he didn't think anyone hated him enough to try and off him. Not only that, Cady was too new here to get herself mixed up with any of that sort of conspiring. Which left precognitive abilities and Liam threw that out almost immediately. There was no such thing as clairvoyance, no matter how many fortune tellers said otherwise. So, he was very interested to hear her reasoning. If he looked at it from a more logical perspective, which wasn't one of his strong suits, he could see that maybe she had been startled by her own actions and overwhelmed with the sudden rush of people to the scene, spooked and took off. That made sense, right? But if that was the reason, he didn't understand why. If anything, her heroic actions would better help her settle in at the school, be more accepted. At any rate, he was anxious for her to answer but when she finally did it was disappointing and obviously an evasive maneuver. Liam raised an eyebrow and chuckled. "Well all right, we all have our secrets. I'll let you keep yours." Cady just became much more interesting, but that only made Liam want to know more about her. She was becoming like some gateway drug to him. "For now." He added, giving her a look that said he'd find out whatever it was she was hiding sooner or later. When they brushed each other as they walked, Liam paid no mind to it until he noticed Cady act strangely to the innocent contact and step away. That was new, not the stepping away part but they way she did it, like she expected something bad to happen. Okay, so maybe he could see why people thought her as strange, she was a tad socially awkward. "I won't bite you, you know." He said in a teasing tone, letting on that he'd noticed her odd behavior. She was definitely not like any other girl he met before, but that made her all the more fascinating. They came to a crosswalk and Liam stopped on the curb, looking both ways. "See, now you've got me paranoid every time I want to cross the road." He kidded, but there was some seriousness to his joke.

"Well all right, we all have our secrets. I'll let you keep yours." Cady could feel herself relaxing ever so slightly when he said this. Yes, people had secrets. Everyone had secrets. But she doubted anyone’s secrets came close to what she could do. Her secret was dangerous. She’d heard horror stories from her mother, of people like her who could do something different. They had a habit of disappearing whenever their secrets got discovered. You could scream government conspiracy or whatever you liked, but it made Cady cautious, and she wasn’t about to expose herself. There was a chance that, over the years, Cady had come into contact with others like herself. She knew that they existed, though she didn’t know how many of them they’re actually were. If they were anything like Cady, it was no wonder that she never had meant them or knew who they were. Liam had no idea what secrets she had, and what he would uncover if he kept digging. It almost sounded like he was giving up on it, that he wasn’t going to dig any deeper. But when those other two little words slipped through his lips she stiffened. He wasn’t giving up. Crap. That thought hovered at the corner of her mind. She was going to be incapable of forgetting it now, judging everything he said and did when he was around her. Whatever happened, though, he couldn’t find out. He couldn’t figure out her secret. So far, though, she wasn’t doing such a great job of keeping him in the dark. He saw her tense when her arm brushed his. She glanced over at him, forcing a small smile onto her lips but saying nothing. God she was so bad at this. All the time she had spent over the years staying away from people had done nothing good for her. Now she had no way of talking to this guy or doing something that could keep him away. She didn’t know how to deter his curiosity. She had no idea what she was doing. They came to a corner and stopped. "See, now you've got me paranoid every time I want to cross the road." This worked a genuine smile from Cady. “That’s probably a good thing.” Maybe if he became more cautious, she wouldn’t have to save him again. That was a good thing. She stepped off the curb and crossed the street with him beside her. She was hoping that an incident like yesterday’s wouldn’t happen again. But Cady knew that if she saw something, that if she had another vision of him in some sort of trouble, she would do anything she could to keep her vision from happening. She felt drawn to him now. Before she had always been interested in him, but had known that nothing was possible there. Now, she didn’t know. He was almost connected to her somehow, and that was both exciting and scary at the same time. She just wanted him to be safe. “I’m glad you’re okay,” she said softly, glancing up at him. The words had slipped out without her really wanting them to. She felt the heat once again rise to her cheeks and quickly looked away. She quite enjoyed staring at her feet. They had to be getting closer to school by this point. Once they were at school, she could get away from him. This very awkward conversation could end. There was a part of her, however, that really didn’t want it to end. This was the most she had talked to someone outside of her family in a really long time, and though she was afraid of him discovering her secret, there was a part of her that wanted to continue talking about him. There was a part of her that wanted to get to know him.

thought i had you figured out
Liam looked at Cady with curiosity when she said nothing to him and he got merely a smile. One, had he not been looking at her then, he never would have seen. Normally he could at least get a laugh, maybe a playful shove, but that would be asking too much too soon. It was interesting, in a frustrating way, how she could disconnect herself so effectively. He'd give her the benefit of the doubt for now, seeing as they sort of just met, but Liam felt as if he was making things easy. He was being open, sociable, offering himself to her but she wasn't biting. He couldn't tell if she was disinterested or just timid around new people, or popular guys. He was popular, yes he was, but he tried not to be the dick that usually went along with the label. Still, stereotypes couldn't always be overridden. First impressions, however, could. "Well, I figure I shouldn't press my luck. I think I'm only down to about five lives." Yeah, as if he had more than one. One he was thankful Cady managed to save. Not that it was really of all that much worth in his own opinion. After they crossed the street and rounded the corner to the next block he could see the brick school building come into view, dotted with yellow buses out front. He wondered what sort of greeting they would get; if yesterday's incident was still as fresh with the rest of the school as it was him. If anything, he'd get to be the brunt of a few more death jokes, have a few laughs then life would go on. He was okay with that. To be honest, Liam was surprised when Cady said she was glad he was okay, though didn't let it show. Though it wasn't much, she revealed that she at least liked him enough to want him alive. That was something. He'd take it, anyway. "So am I, otherwise I wouldn't have had the pleasure of finding the standard deviations of about fifty math problems last night. So, again, thank you." His tone was sarcastic this time, though he was thankful for her quick reaction time. It still bothered him to know why she had been staring at him all day, then happened to be the one person so pull him away from the car. Almost as if she was waiting for it to happen. Again, an absurd through Liam just ignored. They still had another couple blocks to go before they reached the campus so Liam tried again at starting conversation. "So, you're new. Where'd you move from?" Even though he wanted the deeper details, he supposed starting from the surface would be a better idea.

no one can hurt you now

Cady felt relief when she finally saw the school come into view. It meant that they were getting closer and that she’d be able to get out of this conversation soon. If Cady were a normal person, she probably wouldn’t mind it all that much. She might even enjoy a conversation with him. But Cady wasn’t normal. She never had been and she never would be. Conversations with her couldn’t end well. Finding out more about her wouldn’t do anything good for him, or for her. What if she said the wrong thing? What if she gave away too much information about herself? That wouldn’t be good. And Cady really didn’t want to have to move again, not after having been there for such a short amount of time. She hated being the new kid. She was actually hoping that she’d at least get to stay in this town for a little while. But if Liam found out about her, if he dug too deep… well, that wouldn’t happen. "So am I, otherwise I wouldn't have had the pleasure of finding the standard deviations of about fifty math problems last night. So, again, thank you." Cady wasn’t so anti-social that she couldn’t tell he was joking when he said that. Still, there was a part of her that felt he was almost unappreciative of what she had done for him. She had risked everything! She wasn’t supposed to reveal herself to anyone! She wasn’t supposed to let them see what she could do! Her entire existence was about not letting anyone know, and she had risked that! She couldn’t believe it. She tried not to take what he said too seriously. He was probably just trying to be funny. He didn’t realize what she had risked by saving him. How could he? He wasn’t like her. At least she didn’t think he was. It was hard to tell sometimes. But she was fairly sure he wasn’t. He’d lived here for a while, and those of her kind usually didn’t stick around in one place for very long. His voice pulled her out of these thoughts. Cady looked up to check the distance to the school. “Oh, um, I moved here from Santa Fe. New Mexico.” She fidgeted with the strap on her backpack. “Before that I lived in Phoenix. And then there was Dallas and Austin. Kansas City. Philadelphia…” She bit her lip, realizing that her nervousness had caused her mouth to run away with her. “We move around a lot,” she added as a sort of explanation. She had to stop herself from doing that. This was what she got for not talking to people a lot. She got nervous, and then she either clammed up or verbally vomited all over the place. This was not good. At all.

It wouldn’t have surprised Liam if Cady decided not to answer him, or give him nothing he could work with, but she did so that was something. He started to say something about Santa Fe when he was stopped by her continuance. She certainly did move around a lot, but it made him understand a few things about her, like why she was so awkward around people. She must not want to get too close to anyone to make good friends then be worrying about when her next move was. Liam couldn’t say he could relate because he lived in town his whole life, even his parents were from the area, so he knew everyone like they were family because nearly all of them were in some form or another. He visited a couple of the cities Cady mentioned but never left this town for the most part. ”So is your dad, like, in the military or something?” That seemed like the most logical explanation to him. Military, or some big corporate guru, but Cady didn’t come off as the daughter of a business giant. Anyway, people would most likely know a lot more about her if that were the case and Liam was barely scraping the surface at the moment. He could always try to be slick and Google Cady; he’d probably get more information that way and faster, but he’d have to figure out her last name first. Then he thought she might find that insulting instead of flattering and decided against it. He’d prefer her to like rather than loathe him, even if she was reluctant to make friends. ”Is that why you don’t talk to anyone?” If he came off as rude it was unintentional. ”So you don’t have to worry about getting attached in case you have to move again.” And if that was the case then they had a problem because Liam had every intention of befriending Cady whether she wanted him to or not.

Cady was mentally kicking herself for what she had just done. She shouldn’t have encouraged him. Usually if she didn’t talk back, people would eventually give up. But now Cady had talked back. She had broken her silence and given him just a little information about herself. Now that she had given him something, who was to say he wouldn’t want to know more? Crap. She was so screwed. So very, very screwed. ”So is your dad, like, in the military or something?” Cady crossed her arms across her body. She wanted nothing more than to just melt down into the sidewalk and just disappear. That would be something really nice. But unfortunately, she didn’t have the power of invisibility. She got the power of premonition. Or precognition. Or whatever in the hell you wanted to call it. She’d take invisibility over this any day. “Something like that,” she muttered softly. Actually, it was nothing like that, but seeing as she couldn’t tell him the truth, she went with it. She could do this. She could lie to him. That’s what she told herself. Truthfully, though, she wasn’t convinced. She was the worst liar on the face of the planet. His next question surprised her. She hadn’t expected such a leap in his thinking. Her dark eyes involuntarily looked up at him, wide with her surprise. Quickly she pulled them away and looked down at her feet again. “Yeah,” she said softly. It wasn’t a complete lie. There was a part of her that didn’t want to get attached. But it wasn’t so much because she would eventually have to say goodbye, but because she didn’t want anyone finding out her secrets. And when people tried to get close, they asked a lot of questions, just as Liam was doing. It was safer for them, and safer for her, to just keep her distance. She shifted the weight of her backpack on her shoulders. “It’s just easier,” she said in the same quiet voice. She looked up at Liam. She couldn’t help herself. She had always found him attractive, and she had been devastated when she had seen his death. This was the boy she had saved, the boy she had risked everything for. She hadn’t even hesitated when she had made the decision, and even now with all his questions she couldn’t make herself regret it. That didn’t make any of this easy, though. She realized by that point that she was staring at him and quickly dropped her gaze, willing herself not to look at him. She stared down at her feet, concentration on her shoes hitting the pavement, forcing herself to look anywhere but at Liam. But in concentrating so hard on that, she forgot to keep herself distanced from Liam. Her arm brushed his. This time she did see something, though, and it was something she didn’t quite know how to approach. She didn’t know what to think of it or how to process what she saw. She didn’t think she could ever think of Liam the same way again, though.

thought i had you figured out
It wasn't hard to figure out that Cady was not at all interested in talking about herself. Whether that was because she didn't want Liam, personally, to know or anyone he couldn't quite figure. He never really saw her talking to anyone else in school unless necessary. Than again, he didn't see her every moment of the day so it was very much possible her friends didn't share the same routes they seemed to cross. He really wasn't sure what he could say to get her to open up and feel comfortable talking with him without letting on that he was noticing her aloofness. It was hard not to. He didn't want to embarrass her further by bringing it up either or seem selfish by starting to talk about himself. So, he let the silence drag for a while after nodding at her responses. Their arms brushed again but Liam wasn't paying enough attention to notice how she reacted; whether it was the same as before. He actually forgot all about her reaction to the last time he brushed against her. He was feeling a little defeated from her lack of response or interest. Maybe he needed to stop asking about her though and broaden the discussion. But to what? His gaze lifted from the sidewalk in front of him and down the street for something to use as a conversation piece. Then he saw, strung between to light posts above the road, a banner for the town-wide block party. "Are you going to the block party next weekend?" He asked, jerking his head toward the banner. It was a yearly tradition that he often avoided if at all possible, unless he and a group of friends decided to wreak some havoc. He said he avoided it, but really he'd rather go than be stuck home except that he never actually went and just told his parents that was where he was going. While, in reality, he and his friends climbed the water tower and drank themselves into oblivion then waited to see who would throw up over the edge first. Tradition.
woohoo!! sorry for the uber lateness!

no one can hurt you now

It was probably the biggest mistake of her life, saving Liam’s life. But Cady couldn’t for the life of her bring herself to feel that way. She had wanted to save him. If she hadn’t saved him, and known she could have prevented it, she would never have been able to live with herself. His endless questioning was better than the guilt she would have felt if she had let him get hit. The questions she could deal with, she thought, but the guilt she couldn’t have. It would have haunted her, just like all the others did. Every time she watched someone died, she wondered who they were and if she could save them. And when she didn’t, she wondered about them. She wondered if she could have saved them, or if her vision had come true. She could still see most of their faces. She hadn’t wanted Liam to be one of them. She knew him, knew his name. She had seen him around school. His face would have stuck with her better than anyone’s. She couldn’t lie that she was dying to get to school so they could part ways, though. Cady was not a good liar, she never had been. She wasn’t exactly sure how much longer she could keep up with his questions. Though she had to admit that she now had some questions of her own. But those were too personal, and he would question how she knew what she now knew. But she kept them to herself, her dark eyes glued to the sidewalk. His question had her looking up again, though. She looked where he pointed at the banner, then shook her head, her gaze falling to the ground again. “Umm, no. No, I don’t think so.” The crowds, the people. No, it wasn’t the kind of place she would have particularly liked going to. She tended to avoid such places. She glanced up at him from the corner of her eye. “Are you going?” she asked. She was awkward with people, but it seemed like a good question to ask. He already probably thought she was weird, anyway, so it wasn’t like her complete silence could make any of this worse.
